double click an html file and it does not start in the default browser

I am running Ubuntu 21.10 with gnome.  This problem just started after updating
to 21.10.  In the files window if I double click an .html file the system
starts chrome, firefox is the default browser and already running.  Chrome says
it is not the default browser and has a button to make it the default browser. 
Where to start looking for the problem?
