Add EFI system partition

I decided to install version 21.10 on my aging Thinkpad T420 but it hasn't
gone well as I feared. It seems that I need to add a EFI system partition.
I don't think that my laptop is a UEFI computer. How do I proceed from
here? I had both 20.10 and Windows 10 working but of course I now have
nothing because grub won't install.
I have read a tutorial but it seems to apply only to modern laptops. I do
have a /dev/sda5 fat 32 /boot/efi partition but I don't think that has
anything to do with my current problem.
I could, I suppose, reinstall 20.10 and hope that I can upgrade from there
automatically but I don't think so.
Regards,
Phil
