OK, sorry it didn't work. My setup is quite different from yours (I'm 
using Mint, my printer is a different model and connected by Ethernet) 
so what I say below may not be relevant.

Just to give you some more info, I don't think the Gdk ... error 
matters. When I start xsane from the terminal I get the same message but 
the scan works. For some reason xsane sees 2 scanners. One shows as 
[airscan:w1:HP...], the other as [hpaio:/net/...]. The [airscan] one 
works the [hpaio] one gives basically the same "failed to open" message 
you show above.
