Trying to remove FireFox

I just nuked snap altogether and it works really well for me. I don’t like it when snap throws up in my /dev

Try removing snap itself and reinstalling if that helps.

Yes, it's a snap now.

I am not very familiar with snaps -- I removed Snap support on my
server, and one of my laptops now runs Mint, so although I re-enabled
it for things like Slack and Spotify, nothing is in a snap by default.

But I'd update everything from the command line in the usual way, then
reboot, then use the GUI updater, get it to upgrade everything it can,
reboot *again*, and _then_ try.

FWIW I have found that I can enable Ubuntuzilla same as ever, and get
current versions from there.

https://sourceforge.net/p/ubuntuzilla/wiki/Main_Page/

But my main browser since 2017 has been Waterfox Classic, because it
still supports classic Firefox addons. I don't like Firefox Quantum
much. The addons are finally catching up now, but they're still
crippled compared to the old ones, and the browser is less
customisable than before. Since I primarily used it because of its
customisability, and only secondarily because it's FOSS not just
freeware, that is very sad.

Apropos of nothing, I wrote about this last week:
