Amazon says you can put any filesystem on an EBS volume, and the
promise of EBS is that it just looks like a 512-byte sectored disk.

I have never used HFS, so this is supposition: The problem you are
having seems to be that the kernel you are using does not have HFS
compiled in or even available as a loadable module. You might be able
to get the module source, compile it, and manually load it...

Definitely ask Uncle Google first though. Someone may have gone before
you.
