increase size of logical partition

I'm running 20.04 as a quest- I'd like to give it +1G space.
disk looks like /dev/vda1 is /boot
/dev/sda2 is logical extended
/dev/sda5 is /

So I did qemu-img resize disk.img +1G
Boot it.
growpart /dev/vda 5
but when I resize2fs /dev/vda5 it says nothing to resize ???

I have done this with non-logical partitions - is it different for logical
partitions ?
