setting up a VM to practice re-installing the OS

(I am the person who asked about setting up
encryption on my Ubuntu 20.02.4 LTS laptop.)

I normally would not care about encrypting the disk,
as opposed to _specific_ files on it, but my job requires the encryption.

I have now backed up my home folder.
To practice re-installing the OS, I had been trying to set up
a VM using https://github.com/wimpysworld/quickemu ,
since that is what I saw suggested at the sites I was seeing online.

However,

the github page and the readme for quickemu seems to suggest that quickemu
_comes with_ some iso s , but I'm not seeing any when I look through it
and
when I downloaded Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS amd64 and tried to adjust the paths, I get
"A regular file was expected by the 'file' driver, but something else was given" .
and
I now see that 2 or 3 of you are suggesting VirtualBox

.

I just downloaded virtual box from the Ubuntu 19.10 / 20.04 / 20.10 / 21.04 link
at https://www.vitualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads , but when I try to start it,
I just get an otherwise-blank window with a spinning blue loading icon.

any ideas for troubleshooting the Quickemu or VirtualBox issue?

Thankyou,
Eric Demer
