I am running UbuntuMATE 21.04 (clean installation on each computer of
three) on two Acer Aspire laptops with nVIDIA Optimus on each, and
have had no problems with the external monitors (I run one external
monitor on each) - I have the Displays configured in the Control
Center to have the laptop screens turned off, but, they work okay, if
I turn them on.
You referred to gnome - have you tried downloading and writing to a
USB thumbdrive, a copy of the UbuntuMATE 21.04 iso image, and running
it in the Live (rather than installed) mode, and seeing whether that
works?
