It's been running since our last exchange, fixing the newlines seems to
have worked. I'm not surprised that it's taking a while but (subject
to uncertainty induced by me getting bored and wandering off for
coffee) it seems to be looping. Currently like this:

Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-36-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-34-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-31-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-28-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-21-generic
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Replacing config file /run/grub/menu.lst with new version

and has been sitting there for about ten minutes.

I'm considering using Robert Heller's suggestion about

"sudo apt install linux-image-generic"

but I'm thinking it might not be a good idea to interrupt the script
while it's updating "grub/menu.lst with new version"

usual solution to the so-called war between good and evil. My books are
not conceived in terms of such a war, and offer no simple answers to
simplistic questions.
