I knew this would become tedious: Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

I've needed to send my laptop in for repairs. I got it back and needed to
reinstall Ubuntu, and when I tried to set up the keys to disable my
mousepad so bumping it while typing didn't cause chaos, I found that I
needed to install the synaptics driver.

So, I did this, only now that I issue the command "synclient touchpadoff=1"
to turn off the touchpad in a CLI session, I get "Couldn't find synaptics
properties. No synaptics driver loaded?".

What now!?
