Problems starting after installation.

You would been better off keeping Windows, just shrinking it down and
dual-booting with Linux. This makes it much easier to update your
firmware.

This is what I recommend you do: check for BIOS or UEFI updates and
install the latest. If your laptop is new enough to still be under
warranty, then you can install updates in the firmware using a USB
key. It doesn't even need to be bootable.
