I've looked up the technical details of the ThinkPad X61s and it looks like
it supports up to 4GiB RAM, has 64-bit instructions, and, according to the
hardware maintenance manual (*), it isn't a horrendous task to put upgraded
memory in. I prefer to have more RAM or storage than is necessary, to put
off having to replace systems sooner.
My opinion only... it depends... The upside to running 64 bit software is
that the processor has more and bigger registers and that in theory should
improve performance. The downside is that any memory addresses stored will
take up 64 bits rather than 32 bits, possibly putting pressure on memory
consumption - worst case scenario, if pages are being swapped out of RAM,
things can slow down. If it is at all practical - try it and see what
happens.
HTH,
Ian
