I initially installed virtualbox from the Ubuntu repositories several
years ago. Since then I let Ubuntu (currently 20.10) update the system
whenever there are changes. When this problem came up a search of the
internet suggested to remove virtualbox and reinstall it. I did a
remove and install from the Ubuntu repositories. This is what is now on
the system.
It does not look like two versions are installed.

In /lib/modules/5.8-40-generic I tried to do the rm of vbox you had
suggested and got the error message "rm: cannot remove 'vbox': No such
file or directory"
I was a bit surprised that virtualbox says it is version 6.1.16 and the
directory is 6.1.14.
