Linux sound has always been a persistent problem, working on some 
systems and not on others, sometimes even in the same series from the 
same manufacturer. They fine details of the audio card specs can be 
varied during assembly, and the information is shared with Microsoft but 
not usually with Open Source driver teams, until relatively recently.
