An external drive might be shared by several machines. Will all of them
trim the drive again and again? Some file systems on some operating
systems don't support trim.

But there's no Linux HFS+ trim support. I don't know if iPadOS does
support the same as macOS does. I'm using my external drives with Linux
and iPadOS. Since I'm using hard disk drives as external drives, I don't
need to care about it.
