Hi :)
>/home/username/.local/share/applications/gparted.desktop
Correct. It appears in common main menus, when running a session by
this user. It overrides files in /usr/share/applications/ or
/usr/local/share/applications/.
>/usr/share/applications/gparted.desktop
or
/usr/local/share/applications/gparted.desktop
Correct. It appears in common main menus, when running a session by any
user, excepted a file in ~/.local/share/applications/gparted.desktop
overrides it with e.g. NoDisplay=true, NotShowIn=Xfce;GNOME;Foo;Bar;,
OnlyShowIn=Xfce;GNOME;Foo;Bar and probably other mentioned by the
freedesktop.org desktop entry specifications.
>/home/username/Desktop/gparted.desktop
Incorrect. Ignored by common main menus.

Not to my knowledge and https://specifications.freedesktop.org/
returns "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable".
Usually there's nothing to do after adding a desktop file, but you
never know, consider to restart the "main menu" or the panel containing
the "main menu" or log out and log in to start a new session.

Software I recently discovered
==============================
Linux and iPadOS: MuPDF
Probably the fastest viewer to e.g. open a short PDF email attachment.
It's my new default viewer for Linux email clients. The iPadOS version
isn't good. https://mupdf.com/
iPadOS: aio Calculator
If I shouldn't experience issues when using it more often, it's the
first quite good calculator I'm aware of. I'm not to euphoric, since I
was happy when I discovered a Linux calculator that fits more or less
to my needs, but after a while I noticed wrong calculations. Actually
I'm not aware of any good calculator for Linux, all I tested were crap,
starting with issues related to English locals and a German keyboard
and those who get this correct, are not necessarily convenient
calculators. https://i.imgur.com/YFxLtEo.jpg
