What desktop? What version?

Never seen or heard of it, so no comment.

Do a full upgrade the proper way with apt:
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo apt autoremove -y
sudo apt clean
sudo apt purge
Then reboot.
Mint is very cautious about updates and only installs vital security
updates. Me personally, I want all updates, so I ignore the Mint tools
and do a full upgrade from the command line, daily.

It's a bit like macOS in over conception: it automates more stuff for
you. If you just go along with that, it's fine. If you don't and you
want to customise it, you have to do more work than in you would have
to do in Ubuntu, and maybe you need to turn off some Mint features.
But once it's done, it should be fine.
