Kubuntu won't boot

That short list is *VERY* good! I did GRUB first - getting the timing to 
enter it IS a bit tricky - if you go too fast it goes into some strange 
GRUB mode I didn't know what to do with. But it did let me do editing , 
also needing nomodeset, and this brought me to a login, which worked. 
Updated the OS, but on a reboot I had to go into GRUB again, which had 
the original stuff and needed an edit again to get in. Then updated the 
BIOS, and after that, a reboot brought me to a login, not needing a 
reedit. Along the way I got several strange messages, most of which I 
didn't understand and ignored [stuff about RAID, Intel defaults, 
Multicore enhancements, etc]. I rebooted successfully twice now and it 
looks like it is working. I didn't do the HWE yet, though, but at least 
it's running.
