How do I get rid of these?

My thanks to all who responded.

I believe I solved the problem.  I changed two settings in Chrome and
the nasty little buggers have not reappeared.

One was to turn off desktop notifications by default - they were on (I
hate that).

The other was to disable an exception to the popup blocker for a cite
neither my partner nor I recognized, and of course i didn't write it
down so I can't repeat it here.

I'll report back if they show up again, but it's been a whole day and
nothing since this morning when I went in and corrected those two
settings.
