Do I need any part of Avahi at all?

Well thank you for the compliment!

So we should fill our systems with running processes that do things
that aren't needed?

I really don't think it's worth bothering with this any more, if
you're just going to be rude and not add any further information to
the discussion then we may as well end it here.
