second monitor suddenly not detected (resend)

I mean that at the login screen I clicked the cog and chose GNOME
instead of Ubuntu. I got a working display manager, but the second
monitor was still "missing".

No. There was still no second monitor.

I did already try that - no change.

It really feels as if Ubuntu has somehow "forgotten" it's video
settings. Is there not some way to re-install the graphics system?
