Canon is not linux-friendly, but there is a solution, unfortunately a 
bit costly (something like USD 50): VueScan from Hamrick Software.

I have the professional edition and used it on many linux machines, 
ditros and scanners - especially for photo-scanning color and BW 
negatives. Works like a charm. And although Vuescan han plenty of 
advanced options, the user interface is clean and very intuitive.
(I have no affiliation with Hamrick).
