Laptop refuses to boot

I ran the Dell Support app and it downloaded 4Gb of updates and claims
to have installed them.

I rebooted and now the app is getting errors and not running again,
but it seems to have worked.  I was able to boot from a new Xubuntu
18.04.2 DVD I burned. Oonce it was up and running, I cancelled the
install and powered-off the machine (too late last night for
intelligent processing).

This morning It booted normally from the hard drive, so all appears to be well.

Fortunately I don't think I'll need to go that route, but I will
definitely back up the files.  It's been a while since the last one.
