So you do get the grub prompt? Does "safe graphics" get you any
further?
Also try using a boot stick with the same version of Ubuntu as is
installed on the broken laptop (if you are not doing that already).
If you can boot a stick or CD, you should be able to rescue files. But
seriously - who doesn't have backups these days?
