evolution popmail is blocked by gmail OAuth2 security

Thanks for your reply Karl.
Because all my efforts below failed, I probably messed up Evolution by
Enabling IMAP as well as POP on Gmail.
Even activated a Google online account , then removed the online account.
Then could not remove IMAP from Evolution.
Switched Evolution offline, Installed Thunderbird.
Gmail is still rejecting my login. The details follow.

I repeated all Gmail set up instructions:
I set up 2 stage verification and registered an app password.
I edit Evolution preferences to change Receiving to Password and Sending to
Plain instead of OAuth2.
Evolution did not save these changes.
I Removed Evolution from Ubuntu Software, Cleared History and Installed
Evolution again.

I switched Evolution to work offline.
Installed Thunderbird from Ubunto Software.
Repeated the set up for Thunderbird including a new App Password.
Stiil get a System failure message.

Gmail only allows me to see email online without any Client.
Sent emails were added to Thunderbird.
Trash folder in Thunderbird is full of mails I deleted from Gmail webserver
INBOX.
NOW I have just seen 2 new emails arrived from the Gmail webserver.
The webserver Inbox still holds 34 other emails that have not arrived in
Thunderbird.

This long story will go to Gmail feedback if I can make that work.
