I have, a short while ago (in the last hour) found that a (security, I
think) update to Thunderbird is available, so I updated, and my
previous found problem is no longer apparent - Thunderbird on my
UbuntuMATE 10.10 installation now appears to load and run and exit
okay. Help (in Thunderbird) shows it to be v78.5.0 (64-bit). So I have
resumed using it.

I use three different email applications; alpine for downloading and
dealing with my most important email, Thunderbird for sending out my
more important outgoing email (which often requires using return
receipt requests), and googlemail (mostly running in Midori 0.5.11 in
a private window, so that google can not (hopefully) track my WWW
travels, and, so that it does not use javascript on my computer), for
more frequent email access, for access to facilities like support on
this and some other of the software mailing lists to which I
subscribe.
