The system tray is the little area with status icons. Usually next to
the clock. By default, at bottom right on Windows and top right on old
versions of GNOME.

Are you using GNOME 3?

If so, the designers, in their finite wisdom, have decreed that system
icons telling you what's going on are obsolete and they have removed
them.
