Upgraded laptop to Focal doesn't blank and lock screen

After the upgrade from 19.10 "Eoan" to 20.04 "Focal," my screen blanker and
locker won't kick in.

I gather Gnome longer uses gnome-screensaver, that it's now built in to
Gnome.

I've tinkered with a few things, including reinstalling a couple of
packages and removing lots of outdated package configurations (using
Synaptic) but with no luck.

Before I go to the next step -- a complete fresh reinstall -- I wanted to
check here to see if anyone can suggest another place to look.
