I've made do without Windows, so far.

I don't want to mess with the BIOS, if it can be avoided. Something
might break. And it doesn't seem to be a BIOS issue. In that web page,
which Liam found (
https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/06/fix-no-sound-dummy-output-issue-in.html
), it says that it is a kernel problem. And it worked in Kubuntu 18.04.
I have only touched the boot sequence in the BIOS.

... Googling for "VPCEB1Z1E bios" reveals Sony's VPCEB1Z1E support
page. It's full of Window specific links, and doesn't contain the word
"bios" ...

Okay.

Yes, I've tried them both. Both techniques consist in adding something
to two files in /etc/modprobe.d, and then reboot. Nothing special
happens.

But I've found something in /var/log/dmesg:

[ 26.390570] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: dmic_detect option is
deprecated, pass snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 option instead
[ 26.391184] snd_hda_intel 0000:01:00.1: dmic_detect option is
deprecated, pass snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 option instead
[ 26.391335] snd_hda_intel 0000:01:00.1: Handle vga_switcheroo audio
client
[ 26.394283] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: no codecs found!
[ 26.424828] input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as
/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input19

Especially the fourth line seams suspicious.

What also makes me wonder, is why it's "snd_hda_intel" in dmesg, but
"snd-hda-intel" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf...

Bye,
Volker
