Need help on KVM and snapshots

Bad form to answer my own question, but I bit the bullet and spent a
few hours experimenting and have (mostly) figured it out, along with
some excellent clues from the article I mentioned in my original post:

The article didn't answer all my questions, but experimentation
answered most of them. Except for the --quiesce" question, so I'm
playing it safe by pausing the VM while taking the external snapshot.
It's a very short pause.

So I now have an effective way to back up a VM running a qcow2
(actually qcow3) virtual disk.

If anyone wants more detail or has more hints, get in touch off-list.
