Depends on the machine. For some makes/models, you need to press the
power button. When it's asleep, in most models, the power light should
blink or pulse to tell you it is not turned off.

And as ever: in case of power management problems, make sure your BIOS
or UEFI is up to date with the latest version on the manufacturer's
website.
