login always returns to login

That's sounding like hardware rather than software. Just curious, but
do you have another keyboard you could plug in and try this with? It
almost seems like there are spurious or phantom key-presses going on
that are causing something other than what you intend to happen. I
could be wrong, but it might be worth a try.
