video glitch on 20.04 with GeForce GTX 660

During the installation of Ubuntu 20.04, the video was garbled. It was
barely good enough to be able to get it installed and after installation I
was able to install nvidia drivers which I thought had fixed the problem.
Alas, this morning on of my four displays looks like this:

I had to reboot to get it to work again. I've never seen this behavior
before and I've been using this video card at least since 16.04 and
probably since 14.04.
