Does it boot Windows OK?

If so, can you use that to update the firmware?

You could try to boot from a Live USB and ``fsck`` the Xubuntu
partition(s) from there.

If you do have to reinstall, I'd suggest:
1. Use 20.04
2. Use separate /home and swap partitions

I am using Xubuntu 20.04 on a 2008 MacBook and it runs just fine.
