I can't help with the storage question, but I can tell you that DHCP
does not supply hostnames.
If your DNS server is configured to allow dynamic updates and your DHCP
server is configured to provide them, you *can* tell the DHCP server
your desired hostname and it will push an entry into the DNS. Most home
routers will do this by default.
Some environments allow hosts to push their own names directly into the
DNS - a very bad idea, as there is always someone who likes obscene
names, or names that are 100000 characters long...
For a small environment, simply reserving one name for each available
IPv4 address is usually enough to provide named access to systems. Not
useful for IPv6 though.
