OK. So, I don't remember exactly what happened to make me say that
Compiz existed for 20.04, but I do remember it didn't work. (I think I
tried, maybe, an ill-advised upgrade?) Anyway, I saw this pop up this
morning, and decided it was worth checking for sure. So:

* I downloaded and booted Ubuntu MATE 20.04
* Did:
apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-plugin*
(Note the asterisk; "cube" is in one of the plugins -- not sure which,
but I ain't using Compiz without my Compiz cube.)
* Launched ccsm and did tweaks (e.g., enable cube, wobbly windows)
* Launched compiz ("compiz --replace")
Et voila! Worked like a charm. NOTE: I can't remember, nor can I find,
how to change the default window manager from MATE's Marco to Compiz.
I'm sure you could just throw "compiz --replace" into "startup
applications", and have it work fine, though that's kinda kludgey. If
anyone knows The Right Way(tm), I'm all ears.

And that's that!
