Yes, Compiz definitely pre-dates Unity.

I asked in this forum about it and someone said it was definitely still
available/possible with 20.04. Investigation in Google also suggests
that it is possible, but they very frustratingly don't describe the
installation process in *quite* enough detail.

To my great annoyance I seem to have deleted the email where whoever-
it-was said it would still work.
