How can I investigate the cause of total hang? Is there some information that I should pay attention to in order to get some hint?

Oh, yes, I meant to suggest that. Good advice!

Sunshilong:

If you have another computer on the same network: install the
openssh-server, then you can try to connect to the frozen machine. It
may still be responding.

Also, boot off an Ubuntu live medium (DVD, USB key, etc.) and if you
have memtest86 on your boot menu, run it and leave it going overnight.
