One way to run MoinMoin on your computer is by installing it from the
Ubuntu package manager and using the Apache web server to host
and access it. An alternative is to run it is as a Desktop Edition by
downloading it as a tar.gz archive, unpacking it to any location you
like (including a USB stick), and using localhost to host and access
it. This gives you a personal, completely portable, stand-alone wiki.
Back when I first encountered it years ago, MoinMoin was one of the
only wikis that could be accessed via localhost and the other wiki
was going under. Other wikis could also be used as personal wikis,
but were dependent upon a separate server installation. It was the
complete portability of MoinMoin that won me over.
Long after I had familiarized myself with how to do things in the
Ubuntu wiki and no longer needed a portable sandbox version of
MoinMoin to experiment in, I kept it and have continued to use it for
archiving and cross-referencing all sorts of information.
There's some basic information on the Desktop Edition on the
http://moinmo.in/DesktopEdition page. Neither that page nor the
related links at the bottom go into quite enough detail to give you a
seamless initial experience, though. I've created a "MoinMoin Wiki
Care and Feeding.pdf" document that I use as a reference for
configuring, using, and maintaining the wiki. It's not currently
shared it online, but I'd be happy to put a copy of it up on my blog
for anyone who's interested in trying this wiki and wants a
hassle-free introduction to it.
