I've seen this too with my SOHO-computer updated over several years.
For me however a logout/relogin didn't free the memory, a reboot was
necessary to get rid of the maxed out RAM and swapping harddrives, but only
for a couple of hours. The a reboot was needed again. No amount of disabling
extensions helped.
As I use my computer for remote-work, I got fed up with this and went the
KDE-way instead.
No more problems after that...
