External touchpad for Ubuntu?

I don't know why this would be so, and it does not do that for me,
perhaps you could explain why it should be so. For me the synclient
command sets it for all windows and even survives a reboot (I think, I
need to double check that). So perhaps you could re-confirm that if
you run
synclient touchpadoff=1
whether it disables the touchpad and also re-confirm whether that
sticks if you change the focus.
