Avoiding Samba interaction

Not entirely sure what you mean by "conversational interaction," but 
almost always (always?), if you have a config file that's been changed, 
apt-get (dpkg?) will ask you if you want to overwrite it, and a simple 
"n" does the trick to avoid that.
