1) Probably because it's the default -- that's a guess, but I'm guessin' 
I'm right.  If you *don't* want that (and do want 4), throw a "vers=4" 
into your options in the appropriate line in the fstab.
2) No idea.  Should run "at speed."  Maybe try v4, which defaults (I 
believe) to TCP, and see if it makes a difference?
