There is but it is much more active here and I've come to trust the
quality of help on this list. I will post to the mint list.

I don't think that is the problem. I created an new thunderbird profile
and the problem does not show up in it.
I compared the config files for both profiles. I filtered on a number of
things like height, padding, margins and a few I don't even remember and
they are all identical.
I have been experimenting with the userChrome.css file. I can change a
lot of things. I can change the background color, the font and the font
size, I can put dashed lines between rows, I can even make the line
height bigger. I can not make the line height smaller so it does not
look like it is double spaced.
It seems like there is some overriding setting for a minimum row height
that cannot be changed.
