Just locate that suspend key...

YEARS?!? Jiminy, the most I've ever hibernated has been a day or two.
Must have had a major updates download hit after that.

This is a relatively common problem with laptops of that vintage. It
seems to have gotten better with time and newer hardware. Just keep
googling. I seem to recall having to faff about with kernel command
lines to get a ThinkPad something-or-other suspending properly.

What happens if you do a software suspend (pm-suspend, IIRC)?
