Fair enough. Network Manager should distinguish between a known state
and "not managed", though this would presumably change the API. Or make
it a configurable per-interface item in Network Manager: "Show
unmanaged as up? Y/N"
But I still think that the offline/online switch in Evolution should
not require an environment variable to control (or not ONLY an
environment variable).
It should be a checkbox in the preferences, e.g. "Force online status?
Y/N". At the moment it is asymmetrical - you can go offline even when
actually online, but you can't go online even when actually offline :-)
