Great!

So maybe the mobo-maker's labelling is poor. A headphone socket should
be amplified, normally, whereas "line out" uses line-level,
unamplified, signalling and needs speakers with active amplification.
It sounds like that is what you've got.

Nothing wrong with Altec Lansings, by the way! My gorgeous 2015 Retina
iMac has a 1980s Apple mechanical keyboard and a 1990s set of Altecs
with subwoofer plugged in to the headphone socket. They still sound
great and it means slightly less vibrations travelling through my hard
disk drive...

It is unlikely to help the sound issue, but a BIOS upgrade is always a
good idea anyway. While you're in there, check the version, and see if
it is the latest on the maker's website.
