Aha! OK. So what you refer to as "Line Out" is the headphones socket?

The thing is that headphones require very little power, because they
are tiny. Speakers need a lot more power because they are much bigger.

It could be they are playing but you can't hear it because it's so quiet.

Have you tried your headphones in the socket at the back?
