I downloaded an update from HP, said to be Version 89, rev A.  The machine as 
firmware version 89.51 (according to dmidecode).

The download was an .exe file, which I unpacked with wine on my CentOS 6 
laptop. Is there any sort of linux utility that can flash the BIOS?  Or do I 
need to get a flash drive?  (I *think* I can run the software to create a 
BIOS recovery USB drive, but don't have a spare USB drive on me at present.)

I am also not even remotely certain this is even related to the problem.
