The theory anyway was that the software thought the monitor supported
an odd scan and tried to get it to do that which it was not
capable of even on a good day. I'm not sure that  deflection coils
are much of a limit here but you never know what kinds of architectural
quirks could come up :) My old CRT goes blank during part of boot
up apparently due to scan problems but then the OS finally
apparently reverts to something within reach.
